Thanks to HTPS – Ryan Li

Hi everyone! I am Ryan, an HTPS alumni from the class of 2015. I am studying law at University College London and the University of Hong Kong after graduating from Diocesan Boys’ School in 2021. I am very honoured to be invited to write for my alma mater’s 70th anniversary.

The school’s education left a profound and lasting impact that shaped the person I am today. Two adjectives I often describe myself with are “passionate” and “confident”. HTPS played a vital role in nurturing these characteristics. During class hours, we were encouraged to read and expand our horizons through the school library’s collection. As a 6-year-old dinosaur enthusiast, I would borrow books about prehistoric times and marvel at the various diagrams of the ancient creatures. Although I did not pursue archaeology as an academic discipline, my point is that the school’s culture fostered inquisitive students who took the initiative to learn. Outside the classroom, I was involved in the school’s drama teams. From overcoming stage fright to shouldering increasingly prominent roles in the team, confidence is in every step of the journey. I use confidence not merely as an expression of belief in my own capabilities and preparation, but also that in the teachers and other team members. It was in the drama teams I found a valuable sense of community and belonging. Here I must express my deepest gratitude to the teachers and staff involved in the school library and drama teams, for their effort greatly contributed to my fruitful experience at HTPS.

The crown jewel of the HTPS experience, however, is moral education. One of the earliest and most important lessons I learnt is honesty. A particular incident which came to mind was my first English dictation in primary one. I was informed about the dictation but forgot to study, so I took out the study material and attempted to copy down the words tested during the assessment. Ms Yuen (now Principal Yuen) came to my desk and patiently explained that what I was doing was dishonest and would harm the fairness of the assessment without placing excessive blame on me. The seemingly trifle incident was one of the most memorable and crucial gifts I received from HTPS, and I must give credit to where it is due and say a big thank you to Principal Yuen for her teaching.

The teachers and staff I mentioned are only part of a long list of people to whom gratitude is owed. For now, as HTPS approaches its 70th anniversary, I sincerely hope the school can continue providing excellent education to students and nurturing talents for many more years to come.

Hi, my name is Claytus. I am now studying in F2 in Po Leung Kuk Ngan Po Ling College. I am doing great.  How things have worked out for me in this school! I am with 5 other classmates from HTPS this year. It’s going to be the most spectacular ever.

I now am the monitor and prefect of my class and school, thanks to HTPS. I once was a most troubled delinquent student in p6, with rather decent grades but with an embarrassing amount of arrogance I once had. Having seen my horrible mistakes that I made, I went over it, strived to help the greater good and made up for my mistakes.

I would like to thank my teachers and nonetheless the principal that shaped me into the person I am today. I may not be studying in HTPS right now, but I can see the graduates of every year improving by the minute, in terms of conduct and studies. I am very proud to be a member of this great family.

I now plan to pursue a much higher goal to achieve. After all, things have been going very smoothly these years. With great opportunities yet to come, I am more than happy to welcome this year into my life. With the knowledge I stored during my time in HTPS, now I say it is the ripe time to fully utilize it. I will further my studies and contribute to this beautiful society.

Seventy years is a spectacular milestone for the school—it has been over six years since my graduation, yet 70 years of standing firm is the perfect time for reminiscence.

Looking back, the schools and teachers had been delightfully supportive of my interests and strengths. I recall being increasingly interested in music, and I was given multiple opportunities to participate in competitions where I could demonstrate my skill and sing in front of a crowd for the first time in my life during my graduation ceremony. I was also a book-obsessed kid, constantly engrossing myself in stories I found. I’m glad teachers supported me in writing my own stories as it mightily boosted my confidence to write my video game lore as I grew up.

I am most certainly grateful for every teacher who has taken part in my education, as I was not the most obedient child. As a generally hyperactive child, my teachers have taught me to behave myself and take responsibility for my tasks. It was definitely no easy feat for my teachers to continue the class while I was crawling through desks and looking for one specific missing item. Still, as I grew, I took their advice to heart and am no longer the scraggy kid with dirt caking my knees. It is a shame that I cannot correctly credit every teacher I’ve met here. Still, each of them that taught me has made at least a small impact on my life. I am now a determined student ready to take my next steps in my foundation year in Newcastle College.

Getting ready for the new academic year, it suddenly hits me that I am already in secondary 6 and graduated from HTPS five years ago. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed; I still vividly remember my days in HTPS! As I head into the last year in St Stephen’s College, I start thinking about what it was like in my last two years of primary school.

I entered HTPS as a new primary 5 student along with my younger brother who was entering primary 2 in 2015. Back then, I was the girl with good grades and my brother was the boy who would give everyone headaches. Despite being siblings, no one ever pressured my brother to be like me. It is a blessing that we could flourish in our ways in HTPS.

The person I would thank the most is Ms. Fu. I didn’t know what to expect on the new student’s orientation day. After the day, what stuck with me the most was when Ms. Fu told me she was sure I could make new friends. Her words gave me the confidence to play with my schoolmates in the new environment, enriching my primary school life. At the same time, Ms. Fu’s care also nurtured me to become a better person. I cannot imagine my life in HTPS without Ms. Fu.

Looking back, a student’s happiness simply stems from the love and support from teachers. I am immensely grateful for being able to find this happiness at HTPS.

On September 1, 2009, I formally began my six-year journey at Holy Trinity Primary School. Throughout the time, I had been nurtured in the embrace of love and happiness. I had been taught to be conscientious, perseverant and to always aim high. I was also given various opportunities, such as being selected as class monitress, prefect and school representative in the Kowloon City District Outstanding Student Award. Such valuable experiences have fostered my growth from a timid little girl into a more proactive and confident person. While grateful to all my teachers for their guidance and inspiration, I would like to express my special thanks to Miss Law and Miss Fu for their patience, encouragement and unwavering support.

While at HTPS, I was also introduced to Christianity, the faith which has supported me through the ups and downs I have encountered. HTPS has played a crucial role in shaping who I am today. The knowledge, qualities and morals I have acquired still come in useful in my current studies in dentistry and future challenges.

Having a strong sense of belonging, I would pay a visit to the school almost every year after graduation to catch up with teachers and former schoolmates, along with assisting in preparatory work for different occasions. To me, HTPS is not just my alma mater; it is fond memories of the people I hold dear. Despite the changes in the refurbished campus, the homey ambience of the school remained.

I sincerely wish HTPS a fabulous 70th-anniversary celebration. I am sure it will continue to shine in every aspect and scale new heights with the dedication and concerted efforts of principals, teachers and students.
